Abstract
This paper focuses on how the idea of beauty and its related concepts are applied to the linguistic thought of Giacomo Leopardi.
First, a historical excursus shows that this happened in the seventeenth century as well as in the historical-comparative linguistics of the nineteenth century. In the second part, the paper analyses how Leopardi, who knew nothing about those theories, created a complex evaluative system in the notes of the Zibaldone.
