Abstract

Anna Maria Ortese’s L’Iguana (1965) may be read as a work suspended between dreamlike narrative, moral parable, and metaphysical allegory. This paper aims to explore the presence of narrative structures, symbolic figures, and topoi derived from classical Greek and Latin literature, reimagined by the author through a visionary lens. By drawing on intertextual references to Homer, Ovid, Euripides, Plato, and Virgil, the analysis reveals how Ortese reworks and transfigures the motif of the initiatory journey, the theme of metamorphosis, the figure of the sacrificial victim, and the island as a liminal space.
