Abstract

This paper examines Seneca, Epistula 108, 17–22, in which the author explains to Lucilius why in his younger years he followed a vegetarian diet. This passage combines two lexical fields usually employed in other works with different purposes: the anti-tyrannical and the parental language. While the former justifies the adhesion to vegetarianism from an ideological point of view, the latter focuses on its ethical value.
