Abstract
This article examines the relationship between Hadrian and Antinous, his young male lover. After his premature death in 130 A.D., he became one of the most collectable portrait types: Antinous’s identity soon became an objet d’art and was associated with youthful deities such as Dionysus, Osiris and seductive heroes such as Attis. A special attention was paid to the literary and cultural reception of this historic figure and the endless fascination that his beauty inspires.
